On the Stick to Football podcast, Gary Neville was full of praise for Welbeck's recent heroics. He pointed out that Welbeck's form is far better than any other striker in United's squad, and was convinced that United had made a mistake in letting him go. In response, Roy Keane responded grimly, emphasizing that you can't just say that a player shouldn't have left in the first place just because they've left the club in a blaze of glory.

Neville is not backing down and firmly believes that if United expand to a 24-man squad and plan to keep five or six strikers, Welbeck will undoubtedly be a key member. Keane, however, had reservations, believing that the brilliance of a player's post-departure career does not mean they are good enough for United's high-intensity competition. The two former United greats engaged in a tit-for-tat debate on the subject, each on their own.
