In The Overlap's in-depth analysis, financial analyst Kieran Maguire takes a closer look at Manchester City's legal entanglements with the Premier League. He explains that despite the mountain of legal issues facing City, the core dispute really centers on three points: whether City is disguising owner funds as sponsorship money. Once these allegations are proven, City will be subjected to unprecedentedly harsh penalties and could see their points tally slashed to between 60 and 100.
Maguire further clarified that the Premier League and the Championship are two very different systems, so even if Manchester City suffers a serious injury, it can not simply through the relegation mechanism to kick it out of the Championship. However, he also revealed that if the City violation of up to nine to ten years, reference to past cases, huge deductions may indirectly lead to its "relegation".
Regarding the possibility of City's appeal, Maguire appeared less optimistic. He believes that City has a chance of winning the case only if there are problems with the board's own behavior. If City are ultimately found guilty, the board members could face resignation as they could be charged with misrepresentation, i.e. providing inaccurate information to the committee.
