Recently, La Liga giants Real Madrid's superstar Kilian McBarbie has been at the center of public opinion over an alleged case of sexual assault in Sweden. Although the 25-year-old France national team player has vehemently denied the allegations and alluded to the fact that former owners Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) may be hiding the truth behind the story, Swedish police have uncovered key evidence during their investigation, including underwear suspected to have been worn by McBarbie. If McBarbie is eventually convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.
Swedish media outlet Expessen first revealed that McBarbie had allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in a hotel. Later, French media outlet RMC followed up with a report that McBarbie's team had also confirmed that the player had suffered an allegation of sexual assault and said they would respond calmly. It was revealed that Swedish police immediately went to the hotel where McBarbie was staying to investigate after receiving a report from the victim, and details of the case are gradually emerging, including the discovery of underwear, a blouse and a pair of black pants, all of which will be tested to determine whether they are related to the case.
However, a report in the French newspaper Le Parisien raises another possibility, namely that the victim initially had consensual sex with McBarbee and later accused him of rape, which makes the case confusing. Under Sweden's consent law, passed in 2018, if the victim expressed her refusal by implication without explicitly refusing, the abuser will receive a relatively light sentence of up to four years in prison.
Nonetheless, McBarbie has returned to Real Madrid and has been put into training in preparation for the upcoming La Liga away match against Cheddar in the early hours of Sunday (20). Real Madrid have refused to comment on the case.
