The alleged rape of Valencia new boy Rafael Mejia has rocked La Liga like a bolt from the blue. The 27-year-old striker, once a shining star in the English Premier League, was even hailed as a hero after helping the Spanish soccer team win a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. However, his soccer career appears to be facing a turnaround as a result of the allegation.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when Rafael Mejia abruptly withdrew from training and police later confirmed his arrest on suspicion of raping two women. Valencia officials then issued a statement saying they were aware of the incident and promised to cooperate fully with the judicial investigation.
According to Spanish media reports, the two women were sexually assaulted by Rafael Mejia along with an unknown man at a party on Monday. The police are now in full pursuit of the other suspect. Rafilmea is due to face court on Wednesday, when the court will decide whether or not to grant him bail.
Rafael Maia played for Wolves and Nottingham Forest in England before returning to La Liga to play for Xavier. This summer he returned to his parent team, Valencia, on loan. In the first four rounds of the season, he gained the trust of coach Baracha and featured in three official matches. And at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, Rafilmea led Spain to a historic silver medal, with particularly good performances in the last eight against Côte d'Ivoire and against his national team.
