With legendary Brazilian defender Marcelo bidding farewell to Real Madrid after his contract expired this summer, speculation has been rife about his future. Now, the answer to the mystery has been revealed, as Greek soccer rivals Olympiakos have officially announced the signing of the 34-year-old left back on a one-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional year.
Olympiagos released a statement on their official website saying, "A true soccer legend has joined Olympiagos, a warm welcome to Marzillo!" Previously, English Premier League side Leeds United were interested in signing Marzillo, but there was no further movement between the two sides at the close of the Premier League transfer window, and Marzillo eventually chose to seek a new challenge in Greece.
Marcelo played for Real Madrid for 15 years and helped the team win six La Liga titles, five Champions Leagues and four World Cups, among other honors. As a traditional title contender in the Greek league, Olympiakos is expected to add another medal of honor with the acquisition of Marzillo.
