The Sun broke the heavy transfer news that 21-year-old Portuguese defender Nuno Tavares, who turned down an olive branch from La Liga rivals Real Sociedad, has decided to plunge into the Premier League and join Arsenal as the Gunners' top summer attraction.

Arsenal's pursuit of Tavares has been a long time coming. Portuguese media ball newspaper revealed that Arsenal boss Arteta personally called Tavares, to invite him to join. Despite Real Sociedad's attempt to intercept with higher treatment, but Tavares still chose Arsenal. It is reported that the deal is close to being finalized.

Tavares' agent, Boaventura, as well as the English agency played a key role in Tavares' transfer. Renowned transfer expert Romano also confirmed that "Tavares is now an Arsenal player." Tavares has departed Benfica for London this Friday, with airport pictures captured by fans. The transfer fee is said to be up to £7 million.

Tavares is widely tipped to have huge potential for development. Upon joining Arsenal, he will fill the void left by Tierney. Tavares appeared in 14 games for Benfica in the Portuguese Premier League last season, starting seven of them.
