According to a June 25 report, Barcelona's financial woes don't appear to be getting significantly better, with Daily Sport revealing that their current move to cut wages has hit a roadblock.
La Liga
La Liga officially states that the total salary of a club's players should not exceed 70% of the club's revenue. Therefore, the new management of Barcelona in the new season is facing a major challenge is to significantly reduce player salaries. Barcelona president Laporta bluntly said, "Barcelona's salaries have accounted for 110% of the club's income and must be adjusted." This means that Barcelona needs to cut the total salary from 656 million euros to 347 million euros, a reduction of up to 47%.
Such a figure is undoubtedly amazing, the amount of pay cuts up to 310 million euros. In the new season, there are only two ways for Barcelona to realize this goal: one is to let all players, especially the high-paid players to make a pay cut; the second is to sell or rent out some of the high-paid players. However, the current progress is not smooth.
The biggest dilemma facing Barcelona at the moment is star Lionel Messi. With Messi nearing the end of his contract, all the players are keeping a close eye on Messi's pay cut and how much it will be. Whether Barcelona can get Messi's salary reduced by more than 50% has become the center of attention.
To make things even trickier, many of Barcelona's highly paid players have refused to leave the team or take a pay cut. Originally, Barcelona expected to complete Messi's pay cut and contract extension on Messi's birthday, but no agreement has been reached yet.
