In order for the Eagles to hoist the trophy with strategist Manuel Lapointe in 2002, they had to get rid of some ferocious Cougars, which made it difficult for them to get the ball into the azulcrema box. They played to a 0-0 tie on the field at Azteca Stadium in the first round, and in the return round at CU, they beat the University students 1-2 on the road.

The last champions of Mexican America had a special touch in the semifinal against the Pumas as they beat them in that game to keep them on the road. The first leg was 1-1 and the return leg at Azteca Stadium was painted yellow as they were beaten 6-1.
