The Super League consists of a Fall League (Apertura) and a Spring League (Clausura). In the past fall (spring) league, 18 teams participated in 17 rounds of single round robin matches. Points are calculated as 3 points for a win, 0 points for a loss, and 1 point for each side in a tie.The 18 teams are divided into 3 groups, with the top 2 teams in each group and the two teams with the highest points among the remaining teams advancing to the fall (spring) league playoffs.
Since the 2018-2019 season, the relegation system with the lowest average coefficient for nearly three seasons will be withdrawn and the number of regular increases in the coming years, following the example of the practice. According to the Mexican Football Federation, clubs, although they have a place in the Super League every year, are required to carry out a series of assessment criteria, mainly in terms of home seating capacity, club construction, and financial health, and if they fail to meet the criteria even if they win the regular season championship in the fall (spring) and the overall title in the play-offs, they will not be able to achieve the goal of promotion.
As a result of this policy, some of the lower and mid-tier teams in the Mexican Superliga don't have to worry about relegation, and one of the most notable ones is the point-scoring Veracruz, an oddball team that didn't have a single win in 17 regular season matches in the spring of last season, but is preparing for the new season with an attitude of calmness, which is similar to that of the weaker teams who are in the league's abolition of the relegation system.
