The team engaged in a fierce duel. During the match, Kroos brought down Spain's Pedri, causing Pedri to have to leave the game due to injury in the 7th minute of play. Rüdiger and Lenormand then each received yellow cards and will be suspended for yellow card accumulation if both teams advance.
In the second half, Olmo broke the deadlock for Spain to make it 1-0, however, Wiltz completed the shutout for Germany in the 89th minute. As the match entered extra time, Merino's killer goal in the 119th minute put Spain ahead again. However, Carvajal was red-carded in the 126th minute for a bad foul, leaving Spain to play with 10 men.
In the end, Spain managed to advance to the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League with a 2-1 win over hosts Germany thanks to goals from Merino and Olmo.
