The team reached an agreement on a one-year contract. Then, American journalist Evan Sidery followed up with a report stating that Tyus signed a veteran base salary contract with the Pelicans. Prior to this, Tyus had been courted by several European clubs.
TA reporter Kelly Iko further disclosed that Tyus' contract is for one year and $3 million dollars. The signing is significant for the Pelicans, as the team has a glaring void at the center position. This comes after starting center Jonas Valanciunas moved to the Washington Wizards when his contract expired, while the other two inside players, Larry Nance Jr. and Cody Zeller, were traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
Currently, the Pelicans have only two players on their roster who can fill the role of center: first-round rookie Yves Misi, who was drafted in this year's draft, and Tyus, who was just signed. Tyus is 31 years old and has played for the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers in his seven seasons in the NBA. In 2023-24, Tyus appeared in 59 regular season games for the Clippers, averaging 17.1 minutes per game and contributing 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 37.1 percent from three-point range.
