In an interview following England's success in reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, manager Gareth Southgate spoke highly of team captain Kane and gave special thanks to the medical team for their efforts in the player's rehabilitation.
Southgate began by recognizing Kane's important role in the team, despite the fact that he was not able to participate in the penalty shootout after being substituted early in the match against Switzerland due to form issues. Southgate said: "Kane has made a huge contribution to the team in terms of his defense, his positioning and his understanding of his position. Although he may not have been able to penetrate deeper into the area fluidly at certain times, he was always seeing the game in his own way and making a difference for the team."
In addition, Southgate singled out the medical team for their key role in Luke Shaw's recovery. Luke Shaw made his first appearance since February when he came on as a substitute against Switzerland. Southgate said: "The medical team and the recovery team have played a key role in Luke Shaw's return to the pitch. Their hard work and professionalism made this possible."
Southgate also emphasized the spirit of unity and collaboration within the team. He mentioned that in addition to the efforts of the medical team and individual players, there were numerous behind-the-scenes staff members who put in great efforts in preparing for the matches, formulating tactical plans and so on. Southgate said, "I'm very lucky to have such support and the players showed amazing unity and camaraderie. They also threw themselves into the game on the bench and contributed to the team."
Finally, Southgate concluded, "Everyone in the team plays their part, not everyone gets the spotlight, but they all contribute to the team's victories. You could write a story about any of them because they are all an integral part of this team."
